Actress Marissa Bode from "Wicked" recently detailed a frustrating encounter with an airline, Southern Airways, highlighting significant accessibility challenges faced by individuals with disabilities. Bode alleges she was initially denied boarding due to her wheelchair, with airline staff citing the need to use stairs, and subsequently, the weight of her chair. She described the experience as "blatant segregation" and emphasized how such incidents undermine the independence of disabled travelers.

The incident, which Bode shared in a widely viewed TikTok video, occurred as she was traveling to a speaking engagement in a small Pennsylvania town. Upon inquiring about her boarding pass, she was questioned about her ability to stand. When she confirmed she could not, airline representatives allegedly informed her that she would be denied access, claiming all Southern Airways flights required passengers to use stairs. Bode challenged this, asking if disabled individuals had ever flown with the airline, only to be told they hadn't and that even elderly passengers found the stairs difficult.

Bode expressed her dismay at the airline's apparent lack of consideration for disabled passengers, stating, "Disabled people are not an afterthought." She continued to press the issue, asserting that denying her access constituted discrimination. Following this, the airline staff shifted their explanation, claiming her wheelchair's weight, when combined with other luggage, exceeded safety limits. Bode swiftly countered, pointing out that her 35-pound chair was likely lighter than many passengers' luggage and that the weight excuse was unfounded.

This was not an isolated incident for Bode, who noted that flying often presents challenges related to her mobility device. She recalled another instance where her wheelchair was almost misrouted to San Francisco due to an incorrect tag. These recurring issues underscore a broader problem within the airline industry regarding the proper handling of assistive devices and the treatment of disabled travelers. Bode ultimately had to arrange a three-and-a-half-hour car ride to her destination, expressing her profound frustration and disappointment with Southern Airways' conduct.

The actress strongly criticized the airline, stating they should be "ashamed" of their actions. She called upon the entire airline industry to improve its practices, asserting that constant "miscommunication" is an insufficient excuse when it impacts the fundamental freedom and mobility of disabled individuals. Bode's account serves as a powerful call for greater accessibility and respect for passengers with disabilities in air travel.
