McShane specifically recommended utilizing banana hangers. These devices serve a dual purpose: they prevent bruising by suspending the fruit, and they facilitate consistent air circulation around the bananas. This airflow is vital because bananas naturally emit ethylene gas, a hormone that accelerates the ripening process. Miller reinforced this point, stating that even ripening is key to achieving optimal taste and texture.

To further inhibit rapid ripening, Miller advised keeping bananas isolated from other fruits known to produce high levels of ethylene, such as apples, avocados, tomatoes, and various stone fruits. Even separating bananas from each other within a bunch can help mitigate the concentration of ethylene gas, thereby extending their shelf life. Once bananas reach their desired ripeness, refrigeration becomes a viable option to buy a few extra days. McShane clarified that while the peel may darken due to cold sensitivity, the internal fruit remains protected and fresh, preserving its flavor and texture thanks to an inherent protective layer.

However, timing is paramount when it comes to refrigeration. Miller cautioned against refrigerating bananas prematurely, as temperatures below approximately 55°F can disrupt the natural ripening process, potentially leading to undesirable flavors and an unappealing texture. Therefore, it is best to wait until bananas have fully ripened before transferring them to the refrigerator. Both experts also unanimously warned against a common storage error: enclosing bananas in plastic bags or other sealed containers. This practice traps ethylene and moisture, which can significantly hasten spoilage and encourage mold growth.
