Marielle Heller, known for her directorial work on films such as "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" and "Nightbitch," is set to helm a live-action adaptation of the beloved animated movie "FernGully: The Last Rainforest." This new project, developed under Amazon MGM Studios, signifies a contemporary reimagining of the 1992 classic, which originally captivated audiences with its ecological narrative and notable voice talents. Heller will not only direct but also contribute to the screenplay, promising a fresh perspective on a story deeply rooted in environmental advocacy.

The original "FernGully: The Last Rainforest" transported viewers to an enchanting Australian rainforest, where a community of magical beings strived to protect their homeland from the encroaching threats of human logging and a malevolent force named Hexxus. The film gained widespread recognition for its poignant message about conservation, further amplified by its impressive voice cast, which included legendary figures like Robin Williams, Tim Curry, Christian Slater, and Samantha Mathis, along with musical contributions from artists such as Elton John and Jimmy Buffett.

For this upcoming live-action rendition, Marielle Heller will extend her involvement beyond directing and writing, taking on a producing role through her Defiant By Nature banner, in collaboration with Leah Holzer. The production team also boasts the expertise of Academy Award nominee Stacey Sher, renowned for her work on films like "Pulp Fiction" and "Django Unchained," under her Shiny Penny banner. Additionally, Susan Ursitti-Sheinberg, Jon Sheinberg, and Matt Feige of Sheinberg Feige Organization (SFO Entertainment) are involved as producers, with Moonli Singha, CEO of Moonheart Entertainment, serving as an executive producer.

This venture marks a reunion for Heller and Amazon MGM Studios, following their previous collaboration on the 2024 film "Nightbitch." Sher also recently worked with Amazon MGM on "Verity," starring Anne Hathaway. The original "FernGully" film continues to be distributed by Shout! Factory, while the negotiations for this adaptation were handled by Verve Talent and Fischbach, Perlstein, Lieberman & Almond LLP. Heller and Defiant By Nature are represented by UTA, P.J. Shapiro and Erin Einstein of Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Koleand, and 42West.

The upcoming live-action adaptation of "FernGully" aims to bring its timeless narrative of environmental protection and the interconnectedness of nature to a new generation, leveraging contemporary filmmaking techniques and storytelling. With Marielle Heller at the helm, the project is poised to deliver a compelling and visually stunning interpretation of the cherished animated classic, maintaining its core message while introducing it to a broader, modern audience through the expansive reach of Amazon MGM Studios.
