In a significant cinematic development, Magnolia Pictures has officially secured the North American distribution rights for the highly anticipated Japanese horror film, 'Never After Dark.' This acquisition follows the movie's successful premieres at prominent festivals, where it garnered critical acclaim and audience recognition. Directed by Dave Boyle, this compelling narrative is poised to captivate audiences with its unique blend of supernatural terror and psychological suspense.

Magnolia Pictures Secures North American Rights for 'Never After Dark'

On April 22, 2026, Magnolia Pictures announced its acquisition of the North American distribution rights for the Japanese horror film 'Never After Dark.' Directed and written by Dave Boyle, and produced by XYZ Films, the movie initially premiered to enthusiastic reviews at SXSW, where it earned the prestigious Midnighter Audience Award. Further solidifying its critical reception, the film subsequently won the Grand Jury Prize for Feature Film at the Overlook Film Festival and the Golden Raven at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival.

The film boasts a talented ensemble cast, including SAG Award and Critics' Choice Award winner Moeka Hoshi, known for her role in 'Shogun,' alongside Kento Kaku and Kurumi Inagaki from 'House of Ninjas.' Supporting roles are filled by veteran actors Mutsuo Yoshioka from 'Chime' and Bokuzo Masana of 'Toyko Vice,' with Tae Kimura, recognized for 'All Around Us,' also featuring prominently. Magnolia Pictures is planning a theatrical release for 'Never After Dark' in North America during the autumn season of 2026.

The narrative centers on Airi, portrayed by Hoshi, a gifted medium who dedicates her life to guiding restless spirits to the afterlife. Her latest assignment leads her to an isolated country house, where she encounters a malevolent apparition unlike any she has faced before. As Airi delves into the house's eerie history, she uncovers a dark secret that thrusts her into a perilous confrontation, not with the supernatural, but with a living, more unpredictable adversary. This intriguing premise promises a fresh take on the horror genre, combining elements of traditional Japanese ghost stories with a thrilling psychological twist.

The production of 'Never After Dark' is a collaborative effort by Signal 181, a Tokyo-based company co-founded by actor-producer Kaku and director Boyle. This venture follows their global success with the Netflix series 'House of Ninjas,' which quickly rose to the top of Netflix's Global Top 10 in 2024. Signal 181 is dedicated to fostering unique film and television projects that bridge Japanese and American cultures, a mission reflected in its name, which incorporates the international dialing codes for both countries. Kosuke Tsutsumi serves as CEO and producer alongside Kaku and Boyle, with Aram Tertzakian of XYZ Films, Todd Brown, and Toshiyuki Suzuki from United Lounge Tokyo acting as executive producers.

The distribution deal was expertly negotiated by John Von Thaden, Magnolia's Senior Vice President of Acquisitions, in conjunction with Peter Van Steemberg and Pip Ngo of XYZ Films, representing the filmmakers. Additionally, the film is slated for a broad theatrical release across Japan on June 5, distributed by Toho Next, allowing a wider international audience to experience this chilling tale.

The acquisition of 'Never After Dark' by Magnolia Pictures marks a significant moment for the horror genre, promising a film that is both artfully crafted and genuinely terrifying. The success of its festival run and the enthusiastic endorsements from industry leaders suggest that this film will be a must-see for horror aficionados. It highlights the growing international appeal of Japanese horror and the innovative storytelling emerging from collaborations between East and West. Audiences can anticipate a deeply unsettling and thought-provoking cinematic experience this fall.
