China's BMW i3 Long Wheelbase Edition Revealed
Experience Enhanced Luxury: The Exclusive BMW i3 for China
Customized Design Elements for the Chinese Market
The new BMW i3 Long Wheelbase, designed specifically for China, showcases notable differences from its international counterpart. Most strikingly, it features conventional door handles instead of the flush-mounted ones found on the global model. This modification was implemented to comply with new Chinese regulations that restrict fully flush door handles. Furthermore, the vehicle boasts a subtle M badge on the C-pillars that illuminates when the car is unlocked, an intriguing design choice for a standard variant.
Extended Dimensions for Superior Comfort
A key highlight of this Chinese-market i3 is its elongated wheelbase, stretching over three meters (118.1 inches). This extended dimension is a deliberate strategy to provide significantly more legroom for rear passengers, a highly valued feature in the Chinese automotive market. This mirrors BMW's approach with other models in China, such as the 5 Series, where long-wheelbase versions are offered to cater to local preferences for enhanced rear cabin space.
Impressive Range and Charging Capabilities
BMW claims an impressive range of over 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) for the i3 Long Wheelbase, based on the China Light-duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). While the CLTC standard is known to be more lenient than international WLTP and EPA tests, this figure still positions the i3 as a segment leader in China for range. The electric sedan also supports 400-kW fast charging, allowing it to gain 400 kilometers (249 miles) of CLTC-rated range in just 10 minutes, mirroring the charging efficiency of its global sibling.
Strategic Importance for BMW's Presence in China
Despite recent sales challenges, China remains BMW's largest single market, contributing significantly to its global sales. The introduction of models like the i3 Long Wheelbase and the iX3 LWB (which is also expanding to other regions) underscores BMW's commitment to revitalizing its performance in this crucial market. By offering vehicles that align with local consumer preferences, particularly in terms of spaciousness and advanced technology, BMW aims to reverse its sales decline and solidify its position.
