2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS Unveiled: Enhanced Platform Under Familiar Aesthetics
Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled its revamped 2027 EQS electric sedan, showcasing significant internal enhancements beneath a familiar exterior. This updated iteration features an innovative 800-volt electrical system, a larger capacity battery, and newly designed electric motors. Anticipated to hit the United States market in the latter half of 2026, this model aims to redefine the electric luxury segment with its improved performance and efficiency. The vehicle's redesign emphasizes advanced technology and power, promising an elevated driving experience.
The German automotive giant confirmed that a substantial portion of the EQS, specifically over 25 percent of its components, have either been newly developed, refined, or significantly updated. Among these crucial upgrades is an expanded battery, growing from 118 kilowatt-hours to 122 kWh, alongside the integration of a novel two-speed rear-axle transmission. Furthermore, the introduction of proprietary electric motors marks a pivotal shift in the vehicle's propulsion system, optimizing power delivery and overall efficiency. These changes collectively contribute to a more robust and responsive electric drive.
A key highlight of the new EQS is its upgraded electrical architecture, moving from a 400-volt system to a more advanced 800-volt setup. This enhancement is critical for faster charging times and more efficient power management, pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle technology. The base EQS 450+ model is expected to deliver an estimated range of up to 575 miles according to the European WLTP cycle. For American consumers, a more conservative estimate of approximately 400 miles is projected, which still represents a notable improvement over the current model's 390-mile rating.
Beyond the technical upgrades, the 2027 EQS also sports several visual enhancements. The exterior boasts a refreshed front-end design, a sculpted powerdome hood, and refined lighting elements that contribute to a modern and sophisticated aesthetic. The standard model features a distinctive black grille with a star pattern that illuminates, complemented by wide chrome accents. For those opting for the AMG Line, a unique backlit star grille without chrome and an illuminated central Mercedes star offer a more aggressive and personalized look. Inside, the cabin retains the impressive MBUX Hyperscreen as standard, alongside optional features like steer-by-wire technology, complete with a yoke-style steering wheel and heated seatbelts, enhancing both control and comfort.
While specific pricing and detailed performance figures are yet to be announced, they are expected to be released closer to the vehicle's launch. The 2027 EQS lineup will include the EQS 450+, the EQS 500 4Matic, which is likely to succeed the current 450+ 4Matic, and the top-tier EQS 580 4Matic. Given the extensive upgrades and advanced features, it is anticipated that the pricing across the entire 2027 EQS range will surpass that of the 2026 models, which started at $101,250 for the EQS 450+ and $125,250 for the EQS 580 4Matic, including destination charges.
